Protect Yourself against Cyber Threats

Cyber threats on the rise!

Protecting yourself and your company online is an increasingly important task in today's day and age. To make it tougher, the requirements for online security are ever changing.

There will always be plenty of advice available on how to protect yourself, it can be a minefield. We hope this email makes things a little easier to digest.

The fact that you should use different passwords for each of your accounts can make them very difficult to remember. Consider using one of the many password vaults available on the internet, but read reviews and get recommendations as to which ones to use. We recommend one that features two-factor authentication (2FA) - in other words, it sends a code to your mobile phone or other device, which you need to enter into the password vault in order to gain access, much like when you confirm an online bank payment.
The information held on your computer may be irreplaceable. Regularly backing up your data will ensure that you have more than one copy. Do not use USB memory sticks, recordable CDs or DVDs to back up your data. Although these may appear to be inexpensive and convenient methods, they share limited capacity and are also easily lost or stolen. We recommend online backup (also known as ‘cloud backup’), it's increasingly popular owing to its added convenience, security and low cost.

Downloading content over the internet is a great way to enjoy music, video, games and other entertainment along with software updates and informative documents - i.e. white papers, but be careful! Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running before you start downloading. Download executable files (.exe) with extreme caution, check reviews and check they are from a legitimate company. People can call their files anything they like so be wary who and where you are downloading files from.
Knowing how you are going to maintain ‘business as usual’ in the event of data or technology problems is vital. Having an effective business continuity plan can also assist in securing suitable business insurance, lower premiums, or might make you eligible for tendering for new or continued business. All our datacentres are replicated so that in the event of a catastrophic incident in one datacentre, systems will automatically switch (‘failover’) to the second site (disaster recovery). Testing should be performed on a regular basis, to ensure your BC and DR  plan are accurate and account for any changes in your staffing/systems in-house.
